I’m just an old lady seventy and counting if I want to complain all I have is words for poems and today again - after yet another mass shooting - angry words that weep blood onto your closed eyes as you are shooting blind at families in a mall party-goers at a bar people in their church children playing possum under their desks because you have no sense no humanity no words to describe your malaise only bullets - and I too am left speechless searching for words to describe my state of utter despair when calls for prayers fall on deaf ears and children’s lives count less than a round - there are no words to grieve this void
Not too tall or short, not too thin or fat, he only spoke when spoken to, his voice not loud or soft, his face the kind you look right through when walking in a crowd. At gatherings, he blended into wallpaper, chairs, and rugs. His friends forgot his name, forgot to call, they barely knew him anyway. Nobody was prepared when he went into a mall, and opened fire on the crowd, then killed himself for one last chance to be noticed by the world.
The invisible one whose pain dynamited our loved ones with terminal velocity, the visceral effects, ready for the macabre on YouTube or TikTok, scarring our lives. No winners. No stars in this show. Only victims. Copyright © 2023 Nolcha Fox Barbara Leonhard All Rights Reserved

I didn’t know there has been yet another mass shooting. (My husband and I spent the weekend away from the television.) There is something seriously wrong wth this country. Someone hit the self-destruct button, and there is no override switch. You and Nolcha have written a poem that speaks for many of us.

Liz, I’m beside myself with anger and grief.

I am as well, and I’m getting increasingly frightened. I don’t see how I can live in a country whose governing bodies value gun ownership over people’s lives, including the lives of children.

It’s saddening beyond words…
Why on earth? It is almost weekly…
Sorry to hear that again.
Your poetry is evocative. ❤️

I hear there is another hard push by the Democrats to pass gun safety laws.

Ladies, the reality of this poem goes straight to the soul. And bounces off its walls leaving loud echoes behind.
This violence has indeed reached pandemic proportions…
Thanks for the poem, No words is correct. No words will do. I bless you.

Thank you, Selma. Gun violence is now the leading cause of death for children. It’s appalling.

And to think that this is in everyone’s hands. This is not what the future should be like. Appalling. Sickening!

I know. It sickens me.

You voiced our thoughts. I can’t help but wonder what’s wrong the US. I’m sure there are people going through what the shooter went through in life, all over the world, and yet it constantly happens only in the US. Someone really needs to do something about it. It’s scary. Thank you for this poem. Blood shouldn’t spill so easily.

Mich, we need to vote out those funded by the NRA so that we can get reasonable gun laws passed.

Barbara I have been hoping that someone would write a poem about this latest mass shooting. A big congratulations for writing such an honest and questioning piece about something that we have heard about almost every day. It speaks to so many things and most importantly all the fuss for a few days on social media and then the same thing over and over again. I actually really appreciate you two writing taking this on. Not an easy thing to do and yet you both did a great job. When the biggest killer of children any more is mass shootings or from gun violence we should all be writing or talking about a solution. Blessings to all those who feel ignored at something that has changed each of their family members and friends lives forever.

Thank you, Joni. You understand completely. These mass shootings are tragic. We don’t need these rapid fire-guns to hunt deer. This shooter shot almost every member of a family. How much more sorrow can we stand?

You are so welcome, Barbara. I think this piece definitely reaches beyond the shootings themselves. A beautiful, thought-provoking piece that touches on complacency, the killer (lack of knowledge), and the sadness that carries over before one even has a chance to pray and moan for the loss of those killed just days before.

A keen insight, yes.
