The Shopgirl

Oh I cannot write,
Not today…
But what would my pen say?
Would it lay itself across the ocean,
A dramatic art of declaration?
Oh but the stars between every color,
And the Ferris Wheel across the boardwalk…
No…I’d rather stay alone…
But who’ll tend to the children?
Oh it doesn’t matter…
Pens can’t build houses,
Seasons have changed,
People cry for something else…
Would a self-portrait do?
Oh heavens no, not today…
My pen would faint…
The language of the world that once was,
Oh but they spurn to write that way…
The ladies with their green binoculars,
What would they say?
The handsome men with the top hats
And mustaches, stopped looking their way…
Oh but I cannot write today,
For my limelight has darkened…
