“In the Plaza Independencia” by Lorraine Caputo

Students have scattered their papers
in raggedly torn squares

Beneath the large shade of trees
a young man sweeps the pieces
The noon breeze lets those notes
escape from his broom

Soon he digs into a stuffed plastic bag

& unrolls dozens of glossy posters
laying them evenly upon
the stone-block pavement

Sports stars       cartoon super heroes
the Virgin Mary       & Jesus
stare at the passers-by
