Memories Buried in a Box

I am the seasoning in your food, infused with blood-tinged love
grave diggers plow a hole into my left eye, now crossed
black memories are buried there, along with my vision
lifeless in a woeful, cardboard box, are my wedding rings
my father’s voice chasing me, calling me a whore, and other things
why do we run to get away from abuse only to unearth more
deep joyless paths burn into youthful cheeks with tears
seeds of love I was planting, as hot stones echo Kentucky sounds
laying on trees, picking ferns swimming in her smelly river
events before your deception cut my flesh into an absent sliver
somewhere a child weeps and seeks answers from God on his knees
a robin feeds her fledglings until they are strong enough to live
my roots are old now and cover the earth with oxygen, joy, and love
my child and her children are now branches from my tree
those who love me listen with their spirit, for my home is by the sea

    1. Thank you so much for your kind comment. It means a lot to me. I think to be honest when anyone takes the time to respond it touches a poet’s heart. Although, with time constraints and so many talented people on line I am grateful to all the people who read me and let me know they liked it. Have a wonderful weekend. Joni

      1. I’ll be the first to admit that I struggle with time management when it comes to all of the great writers and material being published. However, I saw that it was your poem and I truly wanted to slice out a moment to focus on what you’ve written. You are incredibly considerate on a piece of my work recently..I guess we poets remember with feelings 🙂 Have a great day!

      2. Yes we do indeed. I think that we are or can be a tender hearted bunch. Perhaps I just assume that but I sure know that at least many of the women I read are very tender hearted like myself. Thank you my friend, your thoughtful and kind words about this piece mean a lot to me. I think we all struggle a bit with time as we want to read everyone we like but it is literally impossible. A lot of people I try to read everything they write but they post daily, now those folks I truly admire their commitment and time management skills. That isn’t me. Sending you an awfully big hug my friend. Love ❤️ to you and your family. Joni

    1. Cindy, you are so sweet. Thank you I feel joy to be here too and very honored. Your words are not only gracious Cindy but I appreciate that you see and understand that although there is a lot of pain, I always hung on to hope. Magical, I really like that, thank you Cindy. Love, Joni
