This poem is dedicated to all the men and women who suffer from depression, loneliness, and despair. In the U.S., call the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988 to get help from a trained mental health professional. People in imminent danger of self-harm can also call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room for help.
A crimson line across her wrist.
A bracelet of blood.
A visible cry for help,
But nobody comes.
She’s all alone again
To face the ordeal of life:
The challenges, the pain,
The turmoil in her brain.
Death seems like a safe escape,
But her body wants to live!
She picks up the phone
And calls the hotline – her lifeline!
A familiar voice answers.
I’ve done it again, she says.
The voice murmurs reassurance and positive affirmations.
Okay, I will, she answers,
And hangs up the phone.
She dials 9-1-1 and repeats the details of her actions.
Soon, the ambulance pulls up to her door.
She is not alone.

A most important poem which should resonate with all of us who care about the sufferings of our brothers and sisters throughout the world. Isolation, alienation, prejudice, racism, hatred, bullying, parental neglect, societal ostracism and many more factors attribute to this despair, this lonely cry for help that Dawn Pisturino beautifully, and powerfully, writes about in this sad, tragic, but very realistic poem. I congratulate you Barbara for publishing a most thoughtful and thought-provoking poet. Cheers.

Dawn, thank you for bringing awareness to those who suffer emotionally and mentally. Francisco says it well. Today we are more vulnerable than ever. I’m not alone when I share that I’ve lost loved ones to suicides. My prayers go out to the suffering and their survivors—we are all victims.

I’m so sorry, Barbara! If it’s any consolation, people don’t always reveal how they’re feeling or show it on the outside. People can appear calm and happy and still harm themselves. So, I hope you don’t blame yourself in any way. Even psychiatrists don’t always get it right.

Thank you, Dawn! It’s hard not to wonder if you contributed, but I realized only a monumental depression with depths of despair could lead to such an act.

Absolutely Beautiful .
Your portrayal is both raw and moving. It captures the depth of isolation and the critical moment of seeking help. It’s powerful to see how reaching out can make a difference, and your words highlight the importance of support in times of crisis.
