Dear Readers, Happy Poetry Month! I was very excited to hear about this new form of poetry, copyrighted by Francisco Bravo Cabrera. Please read on to learn about the Euro-ku and its American equivalent, the Ameri-ku, from Francisco. Then enjoy his Euro-ku, “Reflections”, written to illustrate the beautiful photo he took. I would like to thank Joni Karen Caggiano for alerting me to this new poetic form.

The Euro-Ku and the Ameri-Ku are versions of the same type of poetry. The only difference is that one is created from the European perspective and the other from a uniquely American one. I respect and admire Japanese poetry, the Haiku, and I wanted to write using the dynamics of the Haiku but adapted to my Western culture, spirituality, and history. The resulting poem would have to fit neatly into our forms of expression. So I came up with the Euro-Ku and its cousin the Ameri-Ku on the other side of the pondq. The rules are quite simple: A poem with three verses accompanied by an image, an illustration, be it a photograph, a painting or a drawing, but created by the author, unedited and unique to the poem. The verses can be as long as you need them to be but they must form a cohesive, logical and well understood whole. They should not drift into outer space as do the translations we read of Zen Haikus or others. (Euro-ku/Ameri-Ku, Created by Francisco Bravo Cabrera on February 2, 2022) “Reflections” A reflection, like a path paved on the surface of the sea, guides me towards the sun, but if from the sun I came, then guide me to the shore where I can feel the foamy waters warm that pool around my feet, where I can be a grain of sand among the millions that contain the mighty power of the tide, and then I’ll know that this reflection, brilliant as the morning star, is just a dancer that hops and skips above the water in a vision that winds its way with brilliance towards my eyes dancing on a golden thread, for these reflections are just mirrors in my head. Francisco graduated from Florida International University (FIU) and began his career in the arts in Miami, Florida by opening his studio/gallery Omnia Caelum Studios Miami in 2003. His first professional exhibition was at PG Gallery in Istanbul, Turkey. From there he exhibited in Spain, New York and Florida, therefore he has exhibited professionally in North America, Europe and Asia. His paintings and drawings are in private collections all over the world. His work represents the results of his artistic quest to develop, without the need of a “style”, but with the need to communicate and to transmit a message of power and light to all. Now he operates his studio/gallery in Spain, renaming it Omnia Caelum Studios Valencia.

I first read about this from Joni and i asked if i could also write one. With Francisco’s permission, i am now on my first one with an original photo.
This is such an exciting form to write as it not only test our skills in creating life through our words but in making both words and visuals work together.
The piece above by Francisco is stunning.
