Eventually, all things fall. There are no predetermined lengths, though guidance abounds. It is the nature of things, if you will, but fall they must. She fell further and faster than most.

Her wings felt for the first time in forever as she tumbled from the cloud. This was what she would have told Him if caught, anyway. She plunged through ice crystals, then water, then vapour, and then more, until the sunlight struck her cheeks in golden waves of glee. She fell on, regardless.
The ground had seemed so far away, so very far. As a dot growing larger like an incoming wave, the blue engulfed her vision. But like all things, worlds turned. The blue gave way to patchy brown and green. She smiled; it was so beautiful.
Pain was uncommon amongst her kind, forgotten, even. She had heard of its devastating briefness, wondered and considered. Still, its thrall had proven greater than its fear.
He caught her in one giant marshmallow of a palm and lifted her on high. “You fell, but I have caught you,” He beamed.
“And I suspect I shall again.” Her shoulders slumped as her bright eyes filled with liquid sorrow.
That was when they imprisoned her. Just in case, the warning had said. They gave her a view of the blue and green dot. This, they imagined, was a kindness.

Now, she falls daily, to the floor, to her bed, to her knees. The others watch from above, whilst wringing feathers from their wingtips. They all know. They all want the same. For eventually, all things must fall. This is the way of things. If only He understood it.
