“Reflection” by Joni Karen Caggiano

White is the oval mirror of my exodus from the fearsome actions of the monsters in the red-brick house.  Dark eyes blister as my heart pulses a bleak opus once again.  An offering given by a stranger concealed with golden paper and wildflowers singing. After five years of her pleasure, I perceive the wonder of the gift and grasp the stranger’s identity.  Such a beautiful thing I had never seen.  Her face was an alluring light, blazing like the sun, for she was an angel.

Gazing intently into the mirror, I quickly initiate the smooth passage of her gelatinous cavity. My slip is now a glowing covering of layer upon layer of silk worthy of a queen. Greetings take place from the mermaid who visits from the pristine waters. Her voice comes forth like a rainbow of colors. Purple periwinkle smells of freshly baked cookies. Humans with incandescent wings sit on green moss that never stops humming. Sacred is the knowledge the purple birds share as they fly in this world of peaceful beings.

Green vines climb daily, covering this world with the fresh smell of love, laughter, and harmony. Elves wander close to hoary trees talking in the language of our Maker as they sit on the shelf of her noble roots. Thereupon the thickset moss is the mother of all fairies.  When she speaks, even hummingbirds in torpor withdraw from hibernation to listen. In anticipation, I wait when this world of bliss suddenly begins to move in waves and a loud sound penetrates her graceful curves.

I’m now back in my room.  My feet feel the cold of the red concrete floor, and my bed is still unmade.  My mother is drunk, pulling my hair, as once again, I grow small.  Her words pierce like a shard of glass in my heart.  I pray she overlooks the small piece of white silk hanging from my oval mirror.

So powerful, Joni. The lengths children must go to in order to survive amid dysfunction are both tragic and exhausting. A fertile imagination can literally save a life by providing an escape from hellish reality. Many of us can identify with this piece on some level. Coping mechanisms in childhood can lead to vivid artistic expressions as adults as we attempt to work through the burden of our trauma. This piece is piercingly beautiful and terribly painful at once. Your gift continues to shine brightly, my friend. 🙂

Dear Mike, you of course are right it is a very sad thing when children have to disassociate in order to stay sane within the boundaries of their homes. Youru comment is very thoughtful and spot on my gracious friend. It is sad but think goodness I was given a wild imagination and I had several things I could do to escape what was happening to me and around me. So I surely thank the Lord for that. Thank you Mike again for reading and your kindred comment it means a lot to me. Hugs and Love, Joni

“You, along with this piece is an inspiration to all whose childhood life was filled with trauma.” It hits home for many of us and my blog has always been a way of giving back. Thank you Mich for sharing a terrible trauma that you had lived with through your beautiful book, “I Am In Itself Poetry In The Dark,” I know that helps so many people. Blessing, hugs and love, Joni

Oh you are so welcome, I couldn’t have been more touched by your asking. I truly believe writing about our traumas help us and others. It took courage to write that book and I know it was helpful to others because it was helpful to me. It takes courage but for me it means my life has more meaning if I help even one person. I thank you Mich for your strength. Big hugs and love, Joni

Thank you so much,Terveen for reading and your thoughtful comment. It means a lot to me. Yes, I am truly blessed in that I survived and am here, and do hope that my words give inspiration to others who grew up in the middle of crazy. The more people I meet online the more I realize that many people have had some kind of trauma in their life. None of us are perfect, and we all make mistakes I have often believed that many artists get their inspiration from that trauma. Yet we can survive and overcome so much as God is with us. Big hugs, prayers and love, Joni

Joni, I was carried by the angels to sit with you in your paradise and then to witness your pain. You were mothered by the divine and are still blessed. Now you love so greatly all the rest of us. ♥️♥️♥️.

Oh dear Barbara, what a very kind and gracious comment. I always felt like I had angels around me as a child. I was “mothered by the divine” that is such a splendid way of putting it Barbara. I will always be so grateful that my mom told me about her faith and gave me a bible for my 13th BD, and I studied too. I think as children we are so more open and I felt God close to me always growing up and that and my imagination got me through it. Big hugs, loves and blessings, Joni

Thank you so much, Cindy, and thanks for reading. I see I get to read you today as well. Excited to do so. I appreciate your reading me here, and I am so glad you are still here to read. Your thoughtful words always touch my heart, dear friend. Our agent was here most of yesterday, and I have been so busy staging the house prior to that. You know, clean surfaces everywhere. I am not a nick nak collector. I can’t stand a bunch of junk, so there is not much to do on that account, but deep cleaning is a pain. Sending hugs and love, Joni
