THE DOOR by Francisco Bravo Cabrera

I saw the lights, I heard your voice,
I recognized the song you sang
and thought I still belonged…
But I didn’t really mean to knock,
guess I forgot how late it was,
I wouldn’t want to interrupt,
I just wanted the song you sang to last,
I’ve not forgotten, after all,
it was our song of days gone past…

I brought a bottle with me,
vodka, as you liked,
I hope you have vermouth.
We used to share martinis in the sand,
they go down far too smooth.
And here, I’ve also brought some photographs,
some really old ones I don’t think you’ve seen,
where two young souls are conquering the world,
I think we might have been just seventeen…

I know, the years have rushed by way too fast,
and I couldn’t hold them back…

I searched the world for fortune and for fame,
I savoured life, I sang, I loved, I danced,
I’m grateful for the love that came my way,
In every place I’ve been and circumstance,
More pictures too, I’ll show them if you like,
Ulaanbaatar, New York and Mozambique,
wherever there were folks to share a laugh,
with them I’d always be.

So please forgive me,
I shouldn’t have knocked,
and thank you for these minutes of your life,
this glass of wine you’ve given me’s enough,
enough to make me dream of other times,
and look at me I haven’t even asked
how goes your life…

Of course this all has happened in my mind,
I didn’t find the courage to proceed,
that door again will never open wide,
I don’t want to disturb the life that’s been.
Just memories, that’s all they are,
mere fragments torn from destiny,
destined to wither and to die,
inside of me.

A beautiful visual piece filled with yearning, young love, memories and a young man who traveled and tasted what the world had to share.
Your ending was perfect, so very fitting, that first love is always so special, even if it happened on in your thoughts. Big hugs and congratulations Francis!

  4. Oh how I love your poem Francisco. It pulled me into your world much like a novel might wanting an encore and sequel. The romantic in me always looking for a happy ending but it was a great ending and so intriguing. But please can you go knock on that door.
