Memories Buried in a Box

I am the seasoning in your food, infused with blood-tinged love
grave diggers plow a hole into my left eye, now crossed
black memories are buried there, along with my vision
lifeless in a woeful, cardboard box, are my wedding rings
my father’s voice chasing me, calling me a whore, and other things
why do we run to get away from abuse only to unearth more
deep joyless paths burn into youthful cheeks with tears
seeds of love I was planting, as hot stones echo Kentucky sounds
laying on trees, picking ferns swimming in her smelly river
events before your deception cut my flesh into an absent sliver
somewhere a child weeps and seeks answers from God on his knees
a robin feeds her fledglings until they are strong enough to live
my roots are old now and cover the earth with oxygen, joy, and love
my child and her children are now branches from my tree
those who love me listen with their spirit, for my home is by the sea
